93 young people from across Queensland will have the opportunity to make a change in 2024, with nominations now open for the 29th YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament (‘QYP’).

Each year, one Youth Member, aged between 15 and 25, is selected to represent each electorate in Queensland, forming the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament.

Gladstone’s Bianca Duong is a member and operations support officer this year with QYP and shares her advice for young people who may consider applying.

“It’s a unique experience that may feel nerve-wrecking at first, but rare opportunities like this shouldn’t be missed,” Bianca said.

“Trying something new or different is a chance for personal and professional growth. Don’t dwell in ‘what if’ situations; seize the opportunity and discover the possibilities that await you.”

Bianca graduated high school last year and is now going on to do Law and Communications at QUT this year.

“Joining QYP has been transformative, allowing me to discover and express my voice on crucial issues,” she shared.

“It reignited my passion for law and advocacy, providing a unique platform for active engagement in discussions and debates. QYP goes beyond theory, imparting practical skills like time management essential for personal and professional growth.

“The program’s emphasis on public speaking has boosted my confidence and prepared me for leadership roles. Through QYP, I’ve built valuable connections with like-minded individuals, mentors, and professionals, fostering a supportive community.

“The program’s focus on civic education has deepened my understanding of government processes and societal impact. QYP’s celebration of diversity promotes an inclusive environment, fostering tolerance and understanding.”

Bianca said, in essence, QYP is a transformative journey that equips you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make a positive impact on the world.

The 29th Youth Governor of Queensland, Jordan Engel, says that the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament is one of Queensland’s most important and impactful youth programs.

“QYP is truly one of a kind in Queensland,” he shares.

“Youth Members have the unique opportunity to present and debate Youth Bills in Queensland’s Parliament House, learn what it is like to be a Member of Parliament, all the while representing the voices of young people from their electorate,” Mr Engel said.

“Past Youth Parliaments have spurred real change, including the establishment of the 100-hour requirement for learner logbooks and the criminalisation of revenge pornography.”

“Young people across Queensland want to be represented on the issues affecting them and now more than ever, and QYP provides the perfect opportunity to allow them to have their voice heard.”

Program Coordinator Martin Boga says the program is an incredible chance for any young Queenslander wanting to make a difference.

“Since 1995, QYP has been a platform for thousands of young people who are extremely passionate about issues within their communities,” Mr Boga said.

“Along the way, participants have made life-long friends and have gained valuable skills in advocacy and parliamentary education.

“Anyone aged 15-25 with a passion for change can nominate for the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament. You don’t need to have any legal knowledge or know anything about politics – you just need to be passionate about using your voice to make a positive impact.”

The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament is an initiative of Y Queensland and is supported by the Queensland Government and Queensland Parliamentary Service. It is also an accredited education program and high-school students can receive credit towards their Queensland Certificate of Education upon completion.

Nominations will remain open until Friday 9 February 2024. For more information on the program or to apply, visit www.ymcaqyp.org.au.
