Stay out of flooded crossings

A number of roads have been affected by recent rainfall across the Gladstone Region this past week.

With some localised flooding occurring in parts Gladstone Police have already seen jobs come in with people getting trapped in flood waters.

A very moist, unstable air mass lying northeast of a surface trough triggered thunderstorms with heavy rainfall over parts of eastern Queensland Monday and Tuesday.

Weekly rainfall totals between 100 to 200 mm were recorded in isolated pockets of central, western and northern Queensland.

Seventeen Seventy recorded 18mm on Tuesday 30 January which resulted in a number of road closures in the area.

Bindaree Road at Mount Tom was closed to all traffic due to Flooding, as was Fingerboard Road / Kellow Street in the Miriam Vale / Mount Tom area.

A Severe thunderstorm warning was issued Tuesday evening, January 30 in parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett districts.

50mm was recorded in the 30 minutes to 6:15pm at Redcliffe (Mimosa Creek) Alert, near Biloela.

Floodwater fast facts:

– A car can be swept away in as little as 15cm of water

– Water and electrics don’t mix, car doors and windows can quickly stop working, leaving people trapped in their car

– Modern materials and sound-reducing seals means newer cars are lighter and more buoyant.

– The ‘wading’ depth’ listed in your car’s manual is designed for still or low speed currents, not floodwaters.
