Of the same family as the Australasian Figbird, the Olive-backed Oriole is a very common medium-sized bird native to northern and eastern Australia and south-central New Guinea.
They are fairly plain in colour with an olive back, brown to black streaks down their front and a reddish bill.
This image shows an immature female with its colours not yet fully developed.
Olive-backed Orioles live in forests and woodlands, as well as well-treed urban areas and parks where there are fruit bearing trees.
They often occur alone or in pairs, feeding on insects and fruit in canopy trees.
When breeding, the female builds a cup shaped nest and incubates the eggs, while the male feeds the young after they hatch.
