As the new academic term kicks off, CQUniversity campuses were filled with excitement as thousands of new students and current students attended Orientation events this week (26 February – 1 March).

Orientation Week festivities were held at 11 locations across the campus footprint and online, welcoming both domestic and international students to the University.

CQU Vice-President Student Success, Professor Jonathan Powles said Orientation Week was about giving students a comprehensive insight into being a university student.

“We had more than a thousand students turn up collectively to the welcome events held on campuses including in Brisbane, Bundaberg, Cairns, Emerald, Gladstone, Mackay, Melbourne, Rockhampton, Sydney and Townsville,” Professor Powles said.

“Students not only familiarised themselves with campus facilities but also immersed themselves in the vibrant culture of our university community and forged connections that will provide support throughout their studies.”

Students unable to attend campus events had the opportunity to view essential sessions virtually through the Orientation TV (OTV) platform. This involved sessions to connect with information and initiatives that will help them to enhance their university experience.

While the new student cohort hailed from a diverse range of courses, Professor Powles highlighted the growing interest in healthcare disciplines.

“CQU’s top three undergraduate courses for 2024 are the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Paramedic Science and Bachelor of Medical Sonography/Graduate Diploma of Medical Sonography,” he said.

“Amidst growing healthcare shortages, we are proud provide educational opportunities that help industry demands and offer promising career prospects for students pursuing careers in this critical field.”

Professor Powles added that University is committed to providing quality education that meets the evolving needs of students – from Vocational Educational and Training (VET) courses to postgraduate education.

“VET courses continue to attract students seeking practical skills and industry-relevant training,” Professor Powles said.

“These courses cater to a wide range of career paths, from healthcare to business management, indicating the diverse ambitions of students.

“Diploma of Nursing, Diploma of Project Management and Certificate IV in Accounting are currently the most in-demand.”

The new CQUniversity term officially started on Monday 4 March.
