The Gladstone Hospital has welcomed two vital additions to its medical workforce.
Dr Benjamin Chemwolo is a Principal House Officer in obstetrics and gynaecology and Dr Josh Nicholls is a consultant paediatrician.
“I was inspired to become a doctor because growing up in a village in Kenya we had poor access to healthcare,” Dr Benjamin said.
He previously worked in obstetrics and gynaecology in Kenya but has been working and studying in Melbourne since 2018.
In addition to qualifying for the Australian Medical Council certificate for International Medical Graduates and Medical Board of Australia registration, Dr Benjamin studied a Master of Public Health through the Australian Catholic University.
Arriving in Gladstone, Benjamin was instantly impressed by the beautiful weather and warm and helpful colleagues at Gladstone Hospital.
A change of scenery to a more family friend environment was just what the doctor ordered when Josh started looking for his first role as a consultant paediatrician.
After years of training in his chosen specialty and achieving his Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Physicians, Josh wanted to find the perfect place for his family, his nurse-midwife partner and young daughter, to finally settle down.
“I have worked in a lot of different hospitals, most recently the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane,” Dr Josh said.
“I really wanted to work in a smaller, regional town, and not just because of the lack of traffic and free parking.
“I am looking forward to providing care for a broad range of patients at Gladstone Hospital, rather than just be siloed into one area of children’s health.”
